Know Your Clothing

GreenGirlsGlobal is a fantastic blog about eco-style.  They are based in the UK which gives those of us in the U.S. a nice objective world view of issues as they pertain to the fashion industry.  There’s a great article up today called: In The Closet: Know Your Clothing.

I don’t know about you, but I have become almost obsessive about checking labels on my clothes before I buy them.  As the article points out, it’s also kind of an interesting exercise to go through your existing wardrobe and get an idea of where each of the pieces have originated from.

A green lifestyle doesn’t just mean jumping on the ‘vegan’ bandwagon, or buying organic cotton underwear.  The issues are vast and complicated, and we need to use balance and discretion when making our choices as consumers.  The way we shop has an impact on the environment, as well as the social, political, and economic climate of other countries.

When we look at the manufacturing origins of our clothes, consider whether our money is going to support societies that have poor human rights records, or terrorist governments.  Conscious capitalism means diligence and intelligence–it is a form of activism.
